Mass Layoffs

Sometimes a business will fire or layoff a substantial percentage of their employees at the same time for a number of reasons.

Many companies use the RIF or Reduction In Force as a method to clean house. They can get rid of the lowest producers without fear of retaliation. Oftentimes however, RIF’s have a way of undermining morale which can greatly affect productivity.

If you have been fired under your employers Reduction in Force policy, and your employment record has been impeccable there may be ways to get reinstated.

Mass layoffs could be conducted simply by employers drawing straws. Department managers aware that the lay-offs are coming, submit names of their lowest producers (or people they have a grudge against) into the proverbial hat where they are selected by upper management for elimination.

Sometimes employers try to make lay-offs look as if all employees are potentially at risk of losing their job, when in reality it’s just a select few.

Employers can’t show favoritism, but they often will save certain employees and spare them the ax.
